Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Young Farmer Training Program

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a North Carolina-based organization with a mission to “pioneer innovative, transformative solutions designed to end hunger in our community.” The organization was formed in 1989 when founders Jill Staton Bullard and Maxine Solomon realized how much food was being thrown away in a local fast food restaurant simply because breakfast was over. The group recovers food that would otherwise go to waste and redirects it to hungry people who need it. In 2010, the Beehive Collective awarded a grant to the Food Shuttle to support its Young Farmer Training Program. The program is a multi-year apprenticeship that teaches Wake County teens about sustainable farming practices, and helps them sell the crops that they grow at the seasonal Young Farmer Market, 4505 Tryon Road, Satrudays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  The group grows and cooks vegetables and herbs, raises livestock including hens and worms, designs plots on the farm, and teaches the community about sustainable farming. Food that isn’t sold at the market is donated to the Food Shuttle, or taken home by teens participating in the program.
